Sault Ste. Marie's ambulance service was "running just fine" after it was transferred to the local fire department today, Platoon Chief Ernest Skinner told SooToday News.

By 4:30 this afternoon, local ambulances had responded to about a half-dozen calls, four of which were considered 'code four' life-threatening emergencies.

"We've had no glitches," Skinner said. "Everything's running just fine. We'll have a few things we'll have to work out over the next few days, but we've had no major problems today."

33-month contract

Ultimate responsiblity for local ambulance service lies with the District of Sault Ste. Marie Social Services Administration Board, but the City has agreed with provide the service through its fire department under a 33-month contract.

At the end of the contract, any cost savings will be either returned to the district social services board or re-invested in the ambulance service.

Under an agreement signed March 18, the fire department is not responsible for any cost increases that are beyond its control.
