New forest fire confirmed near Sudbury

There was one new wildland fire confirmed in the Northeast region by late afternoon, Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services stated in a release issued today.

Sudbury 51 was confirmed late this afternoon near the eastern shore of Raven Lake, just west of highway 6. It is not yet under control at 0.7 of a hectare.

There are five other active fires in the region:

  • Kirkland Lake 6 is now being held at 100 hectares. The fire is located northeast of Browning Lake and west of Holmes Lake. Six fire ranger crews, one overhead staff and 20 forest firefighters from Alberta are assigned to this fire. Favourable weather conditions have reduced fire activity over the past few days.
  • Cochrane 15 is now being held at 140 hectares. The fire is located 50km east of Cochrane. There are currently three fire ranger crews, one overhead staff and heavy equipment assigned to this fire. Favourable weather conditions have reduced fire activity over the past few days.
  • Cochrane 13, which started June 18, is not under control at 301 hectares. It is located near Wikweyau Creek.
  • Cochrane 12, which started June 18, is not under control at 82 hectares. It is located near Burntbush River.
  • Sudbury 42, which started June 15, is being held at 56 hectares. It is located near Big Lynx Lake.

The fire hazard varies from low to high across the region. Areas generally located south of North Bay and French River in the Northeast Region, as well as Temiskaming Shores, Cobalt, Latchford and surrounding areas are showing a high hazard this afternoon.

The Sault Ste. Marie and Elliot Lake areas are both showing moderate hazard.
