The Detroit Free Press has this morning published some never-before-seen underwater photographs of the Edmund Fitzgerald.
The pictures were taken in 1994 by Frederick Shannon, a retired police officer who spent $75,000 to lease a two-person Delta submersible.
The published shots include some showing two mysterious underwater orbs the size of golf balls.
The unexplained objects appeared to burn under the water and left a bubble trail in Shannon's photos, floating toward the ship's hull and then disappearing into it, Shannon told the newspaper.
"No debris was in the water, and nothing was dropped from the surface. There is no logical explanation for their sudden appearance," he said.
