SAULT STE. MARIE, ON - The Sault Ste. Marie Museum has found its new Curator/Director. Julia Piskiewicz officially joined our team on August 22, 2016.

Allan Hackett, Board Chair states, “We wanted to find a candidate who was both dynamic and relationship oriented – someone displaying a commitment to developing internal and external relationships, and that means with staff, donors, patrons, institutional partners and most of all, the residents of Sault Ste. Marie Ontario.” “We believe that Julia brings all of that.”

Julia Piskiewicz spent her formative years in Toronto where she attended Rosedale Heights School of the Arts. It was here that she gained an affinity for the field as a whole.

A community philanthropist, Julia has expended much of her time serving local communities, volunteering with museums, galleries and children’s organizations throughout the Province. She was awarded an Ontario Volunteer Service Award in 2009.

Ms. Piskiewicz moved to Northern Ontario in 2013 and decided to make Sault Ste. Marie her permanent home. Most recently she has held positions at both the Art Gallery of Algoma and the Fort Frances Museum and Cultural Centre.

Her professional interests include interpretive programming and education, as well as the preservation of culture and heritage. She holds an Honours BA in Art History and Medieval Studies from the University of Toronto, as well as a Post-Graduate Certificate in Museum Management & Curatorship from Sir Sandford Fleming College.

From Julia herself: “I am honoured to have been selected to serve as the next Curator/Director of the Sault Ste. Marie Museum. I look forward to working with museum staff to help strengthen community engagement, and to build upon the successes and hard work of my predecessors. With the support of the Board, who recognize the importance of the Museum and the patrons to which it caters, it is my goal to see the museum become a booming cultural hub. Sault Ste. Marie has an amazing community of progressive and historically conscious individuals. I feel strongly that with the support of such a vibrant community, the museum can reach its goals and ensure continued prosperity in preserving local history. I look forward to being a part of the Museum’s continued success.”

About the Sault Ste. Marie Museum: The Sault Ste. Marie Museum is the operating name of the Sault Ste. Marie & 49th Field Regiment R.C.A. Historical Society. We are a Registered Charity dedicated to preserving and interpreting the history of our local community and area.
