Downtown landmark Muio's re-opened at three o'clock this afternoon after a five-day, $25,000 renovation project.

Aside from the brighter decor and new historic photographs of the eatery's neighbourhood and founders, the biggest change is that Muio's is now 100 per cent smoke free.

In so doing, owners Rob Direnzo and Ken Goodship have jumped the gun by more than one year on other bars and restaurants, which must go smoke-free by June 4, 2004.

If the initial hours of business are any indication, Muio's need not worry about losing customers because of the smoking ban.

The Friday-night crowds were actually slightly larger than usual, Goodship told SooToday News.

Direnzo says at least two customers went elsewhere when advised they could no longer smoke, but numerous others were enthusiastic about the haze-free environment.

SooToday is pleased to report that Muio's original plans to remove dozens of expired Chamber of Commerce membership stickers from the front glass were abandoned and the museum-quality collection remains proudly intact.
