The Ministry of Transportation says it is still investigating an incident on Trunk Road on Thursday in which a slag pot slid from a tractor trailer onto the road.

An MTO spokesperson said an enforcement officer determined that a tie-down securing the load to the trailer failed, causing it to shift and slide off.

MTO says its inspector also determined there were not a sufficient number of tie downs used to secure the load to the trailer, given its weight.

The inspection found mechanical defects, including "inoperative brakes and defective tires" and the truck and trailer have been placed out of service until repairs can be made, says MTO.

The MTO says charges are pending.

Essar Steel Algoma told SooToday this morning that the slag pot was on its way to a local supplier to be repaired.
