NEWS RELEASE UNITED STEELWORKERS OF AMERICA LOCAL 2724
********************* Ian Kersley, President of USW Local 2724, presented Paul Paciacco of the Sault Area Hospital Foundation with a cheque for $50,000 for the new hospital project.
The donation was made on behalf of the 530 members of USW Local 2724 at its annual reception to honour the local's retirees and scholarship winners.
USW Local 2724 was organized in 1995 to represent the salaried workforce at Algoma Steel.
This year approximately 50 members were recognized for their service at Algoma Steel and to the local.
The Local has, since 1998, awarded scholarships to students entering their first year of post secondary education.
This year, five university scholarships valued at $1,500 and one college scholarship valued at $1,000 were presented.
In addition, a $1,500 scholarship was awarded to a student planning to attend Algoma University and $1,000 to a student attending Sault College.
The selection criteria included scholastic achievement, extra curricular activities, leadership experience and community involvement.
