More layoffs at Essar Steel Algoma

Essar Steel Algoma is laying off another 80 to 100 hourly employees effective Sunday says Brenda Stenta, the company's manager of corporate communications.

Essar Steel Algoma is laying off another 80 to 100 hourly employees effective Sunday says Brenda Stenta, the company's manager of corporate communications.

There are currently 180 hourly employees on layoff there and Stenta says that further layoffs are imminent if there's no improvement in market conditions.

"Market conditions remain poor and we continue to adjust production to match order volumes," she tells SooToday.com.

"We are taking decisive action to ensure the long-term viability of this company and remain focused on working safely," said Stenta.

A work-share program remains in effect for Essar Steel Algoma salaried union personnel.
