Update to visitor restrictions at Sault Area Hospital

SAULT STE. MARIE - Sault Area Hospital (SAH) has seen an increase in the number of patients presenting to the Emergency Department exhibiting Norovirus-like symptoms.

Effective immediately, the Emergency Department will be closed to visitors until further notice.

Exceptions may be permitted on compassionate grounds and at the discretion of staff.

Restricting visitation is necessary to help stem the spread of infection in the hospital and protect the well-being of patients and staff.

Symptoms of Norovirus can include acute onset of nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and/or abdominal cramps.

In addition, myalgia (muscle pain), malaise and headaches are often reported.

SAH apologizes to patients’ families and loved ones for the inconvenience and unit staff will be available to respond to phone calls and provide updates as requested.

Patients who are coming to Emergency or to access other medical services are asked to clean their hands often with the solution provided throughout the facility and to be respectful of any other direction or requests from staff.

The hospital will continue to monitor the situation closely, including an ongoing review of the visitor restriction status, and advise the public of any changes.

Residents are also reminded that they can also contact Telehealth Ontario at 1-866-797-0000 for free access to a registered nurse who can assess symptoms and help residents to decide next steps.

SAH wishes to thank the public for their understanding and cooperation.
