Lane Four at the John Rhodes Community Centre pool was closed today during the Soo Masters Polar Bear Swim Club lunch-hour swim.

That's the lane that Dr. Hui Lee used to train in, and in view of his untimely weekend death in Toronto, the club has decided the lane will remain closed for the rest of this week.

Outside the busy community centre, the flag has been lowered to half mast to recognize Dr. Lee, who collapsed after competing in the 2004 Ontario Masters Swimming Championship at the Etobicoke Olympium.

Next year's edition of the same meet will be held in Sault Ste. Marie from April 1 to 3, 2005, with about 350 masters athletes expected to compete.

It was at Dr. Lee's urging that the Soo club asked to host the event.

Meanwhile, the Group Health Centre issued the following statement today:

************************************ It is with deep regret and sadness that the Algoma District Medical Group Board at the Group Health Centre, announces the passing of one of their prominent and dedicated physicians, Dr. Hui Lee, on Friday, March 26, 2004. Dr. Michael Hackett, Chair of the Algoma District Medical Group Board, says: "Our thoughts and prayers are with Hui’s family, his wife, Dr. Anne Lee, and their children. This community, the staff who worked so closely with Hui, and all of his colleagues, are trying to deal with this tragedy.

"In 2002, the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario, in a prestigious award named him as the 'ideal' physician, and he truly was.

"He was likewise an 'ideal' friend and colleague to so many. It is otherwise impossible to describe this loss."

When he joined the ADMG in 1993, Dr. Lee worked diligently to develop and implement the innovative Health Promotions Initiative (HPI) program and numerous other research projects that have contributed to the Primary Care Excellence model at the Group Health Centre.

Dr. Lee received his Degree in Medicine from Queen’s University in 1989 and he completed his residency in Internal Medicine at McMaster University in 1992.

He also received his Masters in Research from McMaster in 1993.

In addition to his contributions at the Group Health Centre, he was a member of the Internal Medicine Staff at the Sault Area Hospital and an Associate Professor at McMaster University.
