NEWS RELEASE TONY MARTIN, MP

******************** Groups helping seniors eligible for $25,000 federal funding

SAULT STE. MARIE – The New Horizons for Seniors Program grants up to $25,000 to organizations for projects increasing the social and community participation of seniors.

"This is exactly what seniors in the Sault need to hear about," said Sault MP Tony Martin as he promoted the new program in his community. "I encourage all voluntary, social economy and non-profit sector organizations, community based coalitions, municipal governments, and aboriginal organizations to apply if they have projects that may be eligible."

The projects must involve seniors and at least one of the following priorities - aboriginal issues, senior contribution to the community, intergenerational connections, peer support and networking, reducing the risk of isolation, and social issues awareness.

Applications must be in by September 16, 2005. For more information visit the website for the New Horizons for Seniors Program, http://www.sdc.gc.ca/en/isp/horizons/toc.shtml

Martin noted June is Seniors' Month in Canada, a good opportunity to celebrate the contributions made by seniors in the riding communities as well as the organizations serving senior citizens.

Previously funded New Horizons projects in Ontario have included a chronic pain management symposium in Elliot Lake, a community garden project in York, an Anishinabe Traditions presentation by the Eagle Lake First Nation, and a series called Experience en action put on by L'Accueil francophone de Thunder Bay.
