There was an upset early this morning at United Steelworkers of America Local 2251, the largest of the Algoma Steel bargaining groups. When the ballots were finally tallied, Mike Da Prat soundly defeated incumbent Tom Bonell as local president.

When the ballots were finally tallied, Mike Da Prat soundly defeated incumbent Tom Bonell as local president.

Da Prat, a plate-mill worker, has been a dissident voice within the Steelworkers, strongly objecting to last year's decision to reward Algoma Steel directors with company stock.

Under the plan, members of ASI's board who were not full-time officers in the company became eligible for monthly grants of shares valued up to $10,000 a month. Background.
