NEWS RELEASE: ALGOMA TRADITIONAL MUSIC AND DANCE FAMILY CAMP

********************* $19,700 OTF grant hits the right note with AlgomaTrad

Algoma – As the Algoma Traditional Music and Dance Family Camp (AlgomaTrad) makes final preparations for their three upcoming gala concerts, their members are delighted to announce that the group is getting a $19,700 grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation.

Local MPP Mike Brown offered his congratulations to AlgomaTrad on the news of their grant and expressed excitement about AlgomaTrad as a welcome addition to both our region’s cultural and tourist attractions.

AlgomaTrad’s six-month grant will be used to offer a traditional music and dance family camp program on St. Joseph Island and increase awareness in the community of the wonders of traditional music and dance.

The non-profit organization offers a weeklong residential camp for people of all ages, running from August 22nd to August 28th at the Algoma Music Camp on St. Joseph Island.

During that week, local audiences are in for a real musical treat when AlgomaTrad performs three Gala Concerts.

These concerts will be featuring AlgomaTrad’s internationally renowned musicians and artist instructors, among which is Shane Cook, the Canada and USA Open Fiddle Champion.

The dates for the concerts are as follows:

August 25 at 8 p.m. at the Hilton Beach Community Hall, St Joseph’s Island. Tickets will be available at Ambeault’s, Richard’s Landing, the Hilton Beach General Store or at the door. For more information, please call 782-4311.

August 28 at 8 p.m. at the Central United Church, Sault Ste. Marie. Tickets are available from Madonna Optical in the Station Mall or at the door. For more information, please call 782- 4311.

August 29 at 7:30 p.m. at the Kynoch Community Hall. To get more ticket information, please call either 843-2662 or 843-5425.

AlgomaTrad (www.algomatrad.ca) offers workshops in traditional instruments, dance and song to campers of all ages and all levels of proficiency.

We showcase and teach "traditional" music and dance that are part of the living traditions of Ontario’s, and indeed Canada’s, cultural heritage.

AlgomaTrad is aimed at families and individuals who want to experience traditional music and dance in an inclusive, caring and family-friendly environment.

The Ontario Trillium Foundation, an agency of the Ministry of Culture, receives annually $100 million of government funding generated through Ontario’s charity casino initiative.
