Mid-morning swim ends badly for Spanish man

SPANISH – On Aug. 21, 2016, shortly before 10 a.m., members of the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a male causing a disturbance in a boat at a local marina in the Town of Spanish.

An intoxicated male was swimming in the marina area when he was assisted out of the water several times by the complainants. 

He became aggressive and uttered threats towards the complainants. Once on shore he then went into two parked boats causing damage to them.

As a result Collin Southwind, 28 years of age from Spanish, Ontario, was arrested and charged with:

  • Uttering Threats-Causing Death or Bodily Harm, contrary to section 264.1(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC);
  • Fail to Comply with Probation Order (X2), contrary to section 733.1(1) of the CC;
  • Break, Enter Dwelling House- Commit Indictable Offence (X2), contrary to section 348(1)(b) of the CC;
  • Mischief, contrary to section 430(4) of the CC; and
  • Causing a Disturbance, contrary to section 175(1)(a) of the CC.

The accused appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice in Sault Ste. Marie on August 24, 2016.
