CONGRESSMAN BART STUPAK 1ST CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT OF MICHIGAN

************************* Stupak announces stimulus funding for Michigan Tech

WASHINGTON, DC - U.S. Congressman Bart Stupak (D-Menominee) announced Michigan Technological University in Houghton has received $452,086 to study the health impacts of wildfire emissions.

The funding was awarded with money from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences Challenge Grants in Health and Science Research program.

“This project is another example of how Northern Michigan continues to lead the way in researching many of the critical issues we face, including climate change and public health concerns,” Stupak said. “I am pleased to see this stimulus funding awarded to support the great work being done at Michigan Tech.”

The project, entitled Respiratory Health Impacts of Wildfire Particulate Emissions Under Climate Change, will investigate how wildfire emissions affect public health.

One potential result of climate change in the United States is increased frequency and intensity of wildfires.

The project will compare levels of wildfire exposure to public health records, measure the amount and types of emissions from wildland fires that occur in specific regions of the country, and develop a model that can be used to estimate the impact that particulate emissions will have on various public health scenarios.

The National Institute of Health Challenge Grants in Health and Science Research program supports research on topic areas that address specific scientific and health research challenges in biomedical and behavioral research that would benefit from significant two-year jumpstart funds.
