One hundred and forty-four golfers participated in 18 holes of scramble golf this past Saturday at Silver Creek in Garden River, raising funds for the Michael Doan Bursary fund to be awarded to two graduating student athletes at St Mary’s College.

Michael Doan was an outstanding student athlete at St Mary’s College prior to accepting a hockey scholarship to attend Northern Michigan University. In 2009 Michael lead the St Mary’s Knights to their first ever OFSAA gold medal hockey victory.

Last summer, tragically, Michael passed away in a vehicle accident at the age of 25 and left a huge void at the St Mary’s community and in the city of Sault Ste. Marie.

To honour Michael’s memory and contributions a bursary fund has been created which will recognize two graduating student athletes with a $2,000 award for post secondary studies.

“The community support for this inaugural event has been nothing short of amazing and humbling for all of us involved along with the entire Doan family,” said committee member Mike Flammia, also a former coach of Michael’s. “We want to ensure that this bursary lives on at St Mary’s College and truly honours Michael for his contributions to our community at SMC.”

Two student athletes will be presented with the Michael Doan bursary next week at the annual St Mary’s College athletic banquet.

A tremendous thank you goes out to all the sponsors, volunteers, staff at SMC and everyone who supported this event.
