ROTARY CLUB OF SAULT STE MARIE
Just five days after his 100th birthday, Fred Gard will be joining the ROTARYFEST Community Day Parade as the parade marshal.
Fred is a long-time resident of the Sault, and has given of himself to our community in many ways.
Fred moved to the Sault from Toronto in 1937 at the age of 23 in search of work, and found a printing job.
He enlisted in the army when he was 27, and from 1942 to 1946, served Canada oversees in World War 2.
Fred’s father, Edwin Gard, also served his country, and gave his life in February of 1917 in the trenches of France, when Fred was only two and a half years old.
For the past 67 years, Fred has been serving our community through his work with the legion.
He has been on numerous committees, including the visiting committee, the new building committee, and the funeral committee.
The Rotary Club of Sault Ste. Marie is honoured to have a parade marshal who is such an estimable example of “Service above Self”, Rotary’s motto.
Additionally, 2014 marks the 70th anniversary of D-Day, when fourteen thousand young Canadians stormed Juno Beach, and 359 of them lost their lives in service to their country.
Let us never forget the sacrifice of those who gave their lives, or the sacrifice of veterans such as Fred Gard who experienced the unimaginable for our freedom.
This year’s Community Day Parade theme is “Happiness is…”
To Fred, happiness is sports, especially tennis (which he loved playing, and now loves watching on television) and his wife, Joan.
When asked how it feels to be 100 years old, Fred smiled, shrugged his shoulders, and said, “No different!”
Join us on July 19th at the Community Day Parade as we wave, celebrate, and wish a compassionate man a happy birthday.
ROTARYFEST, The Sault’s Summer Festival!, is one of our community’s most cherished annual traditions.
This year the festivities run from July 17-19 centered in Clergue Park.
The festival presents a number of exciting events including The Stage which features three days of free entertainment, the 93rd annual Rotary Community Day Parade preceded by runners for the Miracle Mile Colour Blast, the glint of steel and hot wheels featured in the Wheels on the Water Car Show, and the hands-on fun of the Tenaris PlayZone.
