The City of Sault Ste. Marie and the Rotary Club of Sault Ste. Marie North are pleased to announce the winner of the 'Mayor for a Day' contest. Perzan Umrigar, a Grade 5 student from Holy Cross Catholic School, has been selected as our community’s Mayor for a Day.

“I was once again impressed by the quality and creativity of the submissions we received from local students,” said Mayor Christian Provenzano. “What I really enjoyed about Perzan’s video was the knowledge of municipal issues he demonstrated. One of the reasons why we launched this contest in 2016 was to increase civic engagement with our youth, and the submissions we received demonstrated an impressive understanding of local governance along with a passion for our community.”

Honourable mentions for creative submissions include:

  • Hazel Berlinguette (Greenwood Public School)
  • Olivia Robinson (Holy Cross Catholic School)
  • Keira Laroue (Eastview Public School)
  • Elliana Brohart and Abby Carlucci (Holy Cross Catholic School)
  • Greer Hammerberg (Grandview Public School)
  • Pryia Rasaiah (Queen Elizabeth Public School)
  • Adam Bernardo (Our Lady of Lourdes)
  • Adrika Haldar (St. Paul Catholic School)
  • Paul Dumanski (St. Francis Catholic School)
  • Rhiannon Barbeau (Tarentorus Public School)

Applications were submitted from students in schools across the community, including entire grade five classrooms at Grandview Public School, Riverview Public School, Queen Elizabeth Public School, Tarentorus Public School and Our Lady of Lourdes. As a recognition of their efforts, Mayor Provenzano will be visiting each of the aforementioned classes.

As the 'Mayor for a Day', Perzan will officially open the Sept. 24, 2018 meeting of City Council and his video will be played at the beginning of the meeting. Perzan will get to tour the Civic Centre and participate in some of Mayor Provenzano's activities. His class at Holy Cross will receive a pizza party and a visit from the Mayor.

Perzan will also attend a Rotary Club of Sault Ste. Marie North breakfast with his family. On behalf of the club, he will participate in a cheque presentation to Algoma Family Services.

The Mayor for a Day Contest was jointly sponsored by the City of Sault Ste. Marie and Rotary Club of Sault Ste. Marie North.
