A family physician from Innisfil, Ont. is expected to be appointed next week as medical director of Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services.
Dr. Ian Gordon Young, who has served in a similar capacity with Barrie Fire and Emergency Service, won't be treating our firefighters' ailments.
His responsibilities will be part-time and more related to training and medical policy.
"As of Jan. 1, 2020, Emergency Medical Services (EMS) transitioned to District of Sault Ste. Marie Social Services Administration Board (DSSMSSAB)," says Karen Marlow, the city's manager of purchasing, who was involved in preparing a request for proposals for the position.
"During the timeframe that EMS was within fire services division, insight on policy and emergency medical service delivery was provided to fire services. Now that EMS is no longer with fire services, a medical director is required to provided medical oversight in the following areas: training, quality assurance, delegation of authority for controlled acts and medical policy review for medical responses," Marlow said in a report prepared for Monday's City Council meeting.
If city councillors agree, Dr. Young will be hired for three years with an option for as many as two more years if both sides agree.
His submission was the only one received in response to the Sault's request for proposals.
He'll be paid about $10,000 a year, depending on call volume.
Monday's City Council meeting will be livestreamed on SooToday starting at 4:30 p.m.
