The Mayor's Youth Advisory Council (MYAC) is looking for new members who are passionate about making a difference in Sault Ste. Marie.

MYAC provides a voice for youth while advising city council of important issues that concern the city's younger population. MYAC is composed of up to 12 youths from Sault Ste. Marie, and its members are enabled to contribute to the community through the council. MYAC has an annual operating budget, and its members are responsible for allocating these funds through capital projects, the MYAC Leadership Scholarship and the Youth Fund, a micro-grant program that provides financial support to programs, activities and events that benefit youth in the community.

“It is paramount for the city to engage with youth and ensure they are provided with meaningful opportunities to contribute to our community,” said Mayor Matthew Shoemaker.

“With young Saultites engaged in the future of Sault Ste. Marie, it will position the city to better address the challenges we face. I want to say to potential applicants: We need your time. We need your input. We need your knowledge. We need your skills. Please consider submitting an application.”

To serve on the council, you must be between the ages of 14 to 24 and reside in/enrolled in a secondary or post-secondary school in Sault Ste. Marie. Applicants under the age of 18 will need the consent of a parent or guardian to apply.

MYAC meetings will be held either virtually or in person once a month in the evenings or after school. The current term will run until June.

Youths interested in applying should expect a time commitment of between eight to 13 hours per month if they are selected for the council. For high school students, time spent on council activities can be used towards community service hours that are required to graduate.

The deadline to apply is Feb. 28, 2023. To access the application form and to learn more about MYAC, visit: saultstemarie.ca/MYAC.
