Saultite Maureen Sullivan has been named to the board of directors of Sudbury Regional Hospital.

Sullivan was one of three new out-of-town directors sworn in at a special board meeting yesterday.

Her appointment follows an operational review that recommended a reconfiguration of the board to better reflect the cultural diversity and large geographic area served by the regional hospital.

Sullivan works as a human resources advisor with the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources.

A Sudbury Regional Hospital news release indicates she has special experience in the development, implementation and evaluation of business plans.

Sullivan has also served as a water commissioner and director of PUC Inc. and as trustee and vice-chair of the Sault Ste. Marie Public Board of Education.

Also appointed as new directors:

- Raymond Chenier from Timmins. Thirty-six years experience as a teacher, vice principal, principal, superintendent and director of education in Sudbury and Timmins. Chenier has also served as assistant deputy minister of education and as vice chair for the Timmins and District Hospital Board.

- Angela Wemigwans from Manitoulin Island. A financial officer for the Wikwemikong Health Centre.

An ex-officio director will also be appointed to represent the Northern Ontario Medical School.

New guidelines

The hospital's new guidelines for selection of directors require at least two of them to be from outside of the City of Greater Sudbury.

The board must also have a minimum of four francophone directors and at least one of aboriginal descent.

Graham Scott, the hospital's government-appointed supervisor, said that the reconfigured board faces important challenges in keeping the hospital on track with its recovery plan and the second phase of its capital project.

Major cost overruns

Sudbury Regional Hospital is currently consolidating all its hospital-based services from three sites onto one new site (shown above).

The redevelopment project has been on mothballs for two years because of cost overruns and the hospital still lacks the cash to proceed with construction.
