Marcoux, medals, and a meal (10 photos)

A program for adults with developmental disabilities had Mac Marcoux over for lunch

Participants of Breaking Away - a non-profit organization for adults with developmental disabilities - had a very special guest drop by for lunch Monday.

Mac Marcoux, a local skier who has medaled in both the 2014 and 2018 Paralympic Winter Games, showed up at the program’s headquarters to hang out.

“If I can inspire people to get involved with sport in any way, or you know, want to go skiing one day, that’s what kind of makes me feel good,” said Marcoux.

After taking a couple questions, Marcoux began to take out his medals, which were then passed around to people in the Breaking Away program.

“It’s a great opportunity for these kids, because how many kids get to see an actual Olympic medal?,” said Breaking Away board of directors president Mary Ann Suraci.

Breaking Away began around 13 years ago out of necessity, says Debra Tonon, whose daughter, Danielle, takes part in the program.

“It started because there wasn’t any life skills or learning atmosphere for these young individuals that were finishing high school at 21 years old,” Tonon said. “So out of desperation, myself and other parents got together and we started this program with the help of many people.”

Breaking Away now has nine people taking part in its program, which includes activities for adults with developmental disabilities such as zumba, yoga, and trips to the library.

“They have friendships, they have a life that continues, just like you or I would have,” said Tonon. “They love coming everyday. They just love it, and there’s growth so I’m happy about that.”

Marcoux, who is enjoying ‘chill time’ until his training for the world championships ramps up in August, says that he couldn’t say no to ‘such an awesome program for Sault Ste. Marie’ like Breaking Away.

“That’s what we’re trying to do as athletes, inspire other people to want to do better in sport or even just get involved,” Marcoux said. “It’s an honour know that I can do that for people.”
