35-year-old Marc Jean Lalonde of Elliot Lake is in police custody after police responded to a call yesterday from a man who said he'd taken several pills and "would open fire" if police responded.

Ontario Provincial Police said that after advising he'd taken medication the man hung up on them.

The threat to fire on police was made when the OPP communication centre in North Bay returned the call and advised the man that they'd be attending at his residence.

When policed arrived, they initially spoke to the man through the door.

"A few seconds later the accused opened the door to allow officers in and police noted that the accused had a gun with him," says an OPP release.

"The suspect was known to police and officers were able to convince the male to put the weapon down where he was subsequently arrested."

Lalonde is charged with:

- uttering a threat to cause death or bodily harm

- three counts of careless use of a firearm, weapon, or ammunition - possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose

He remains in custody waiting for a bail hearing.
