Man fined for careless use of firearm while hunting

A Sault Ste. Marie moose hunter was fined $2,000 for careless use of a firearm.

Derek Grisdale pleaded guilty to carelessly discharging a firearm while hunting.

He must successfully complete the hunter education course before he can apply for a new hunting licence.

Court heard that on October 7, 2011, Grisdale shot and killed a moose from Frater Road, north of Montreal River.

Conservation officers, alerted by complaints from other hunters, located the kill site.

Their investigation determined that Grisdale could not have checked for approaching people or vehicles from the spot he fired his gun.

The moose was seized and forfeited to the Crown.

Justice of the Peace Paula Nichols heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, Sault Ste. Marie, on January 10, 2014.

The Ministry of Natural Resources reminds hunters that careless hunting is illegal.
