Maggie McGoldrick wins $17,500 to Fund Graduate Studies

Algoma University is pleased to announce that recent graduate Maggie McGoldrick has been awarded a prestigious Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) Joseph-Armand Bombardier Canada Graduate Scholarship, valued at $17,500.

SSHRC scholarships provide graduate students with funds to help support their research efforts in full-time graduate programs across Canada.

These scholarships also help students develop sophisticated research skills, and assist in the training of young research professionals in both the Social Sciences and Humanities.

McGoldrick is from Goulais River, Ontario, and graduated from the University in June with a four-year Bachelor of Arts Honours Degree in History.

At the June Convocation Ceremony, she was nominated by her faculty to deliver the Expression of Thanks.

In April, she presented her fourth-year thesis at the Annual Honours History Thesis Night, titled “Not an Indian Tradition: Slavery, Prostitution, and the Position of Women among the Great Lakes Iroquois and Ojibway”.

McGoldrick was accepted into four prestigious graduate studies programs across Ontario, and is currently attending Queen’s University to pursue her Masters of Arts in History.

She has received a Graduate Teaching Assistantship valued at $11,000 to help fund her studies.

McGoldrick is excited to continue with higher education to receive a SSHRC scholarship.

“As a mature student who changed career directions, and had to make a lot of sacrifices to follow a new path, it's confirmation that I made the right decision and found my passion in life. Even more than that, it’s a lesson to myself, and anyone else considering higher education, that they can succeed if they really want to," said McGoldrick.

This is the third consecutive year that a History student of Algoma University has been awarded with a SSHRC Scholarship.
