NEWS RELEASE
Twenty-one years ago on February 14, the first annual march was held to honour the missing or murdered Aboriginal women in Downtown Eastside Vancouver.
The Zonta Club of Sault Ste. Marie and Area is concerned about the continuing issue of the over 600 missing Aboriginal women in Canada.
As a result, Zonta is bringing Michele Audette, president of the Native Women’s Association of Canada, to speak to our community on Sunday, April 14, 2013 at the Algoma’s Water Tower Inn.
“What better day than February 14 to announce our upcoming speaker event in April! We are aware that Aboriginal women in all parts of Canada face shockingly high rates of violence. This is a human rights issue that must be addressed,” states local Zonta president Gayle Manley. “We are excited to bring Michele Audette, a strong voice for Aboriginal women in Canada, to raise awareness of this intolerable issue for our community. We want to know what each of us can do to stand with our Aboriginal sisters against the violence.”
The Zonta Club of Sault Ste. Marie Area is part of an international service organization of women which seeks to advance the status of women worldwide by improving the legal, political, economic, educational, health and professional status of women at the global and local levels through service and advocacy.
