Local photography grads make their mark on the national level

Sault College photography graduates continue to make their mark on the national level

SAULT STE. MARIE - The votes are in and two Sault College photography students are amongst the world’s best emerging photographers for 2013.

This recognition comes on the heels of Sault College graduate Callie Heppner being awarded one of Photolife Magazine’s Top 15 Emerging Photographer’s in Canada for 2012 and being nominated for the 2013 Premier’s Award in the recent graduate category.

Students Chandra Barnett and Christine Rollins have been recognized by the Applied Arts magazine.

“Applied Arts magazine is considered one of the most prestigious student awards in photography,” notes Colin Crowell, professor in the Digital Photography and Imaging program at Sault College. “The magazine receives over 10,000 submissions across North America and Europe and to have two winners from our program is truly remarkable.”

Each entry is judged by an independent panel of highly regarded industry professionals and experts, based on creative merit and technical excellence.

"Winning this award is such an honour,” notes Christine Rollins, Digital Photography student at Sault College and one of the Applied Arts magazine student award winners. “My teachers in the Digital Photography Program at Sault College have really opened up a whole new world for me. This wouldn't have been possible without them."

Often dominated by photographers in major urban centres, to have students from Northern Ontario and Sault College is exceptional.

"Receiving this kind of recognition from the greater art community in Canada is so incredibly validating for me as an artist, and inspires me to work even harder,” notes Chandra Barnett, the second Applied Arts magazine student award winner and student of Digital Photography and Imaging at the College. “I look forward to what may come in the future."

The College is only too pleased to extend our congratulations to both Chandra and Christine on this remarkable achievement. 

Both Christine and Chandra will be recognized at an invitation-only event in the fall where 2013 award winners across all disciplines’ work will be displayed.

“This is a major accomplishment for these students and a big success for our College,” adds Crowell.  “It’s great to see our students succeed in this way.”
