(Sault Ste. Marie, ON October 2, 2018) – This year, Sault College welcomed a record number of international students to its campus. With more than 420 international students representing 15 countries from around the world, our campus and our community continues to grow and diversify.

Each of these students has enriched our campus and allowed us to gain an amazing appreciation for various cultures and celebrate diversity, equity, inclusion and respect. Welcoming these students also has tremendous benefits to our community both socially and economically. These students live, play, study and work in Sault Ste. Marie, helping to support our local economy in various ways.

Many of Sault College’s international students are interested in finding meaningful employment within the community so they can gain hands-on work experience, develop their language, communication, and social skills, and contribute to our local economy. Two McDonald’s locations in Sault Ste. Marie have been instrumental in helping these students accomplish this.

As a leader in providing part-time employment opportunities to our international students, the two McDonald’s locations have hired approximately 50 of our international students since February 2018. McDonald’s has had some difficulty recruiting part-time workers and the organization willingly and enthusiastically hired many of our students to help fill this gap.

“We are extremely thankful for the tremendous support and opportunities McDonald’s has provided to our international students. Many of these students come to Canada highly educated, but do not have a lot of on-the-job work experience. Their ability to see and recognize potential in our students and willingness to hire individuals with little to no work experience is amazing,” says Ray Corcoran, Student Employment Officer, Sault College. “They are changing the lives of these students by providing a true Canadian work experience that enhances language, communication and customer service skills all of which are skills that employers require in candidates they are looking to hire.”

This work not only helps our students gain valuable work experience, it also provides them with an all-encompassing community experience.

“We’d like to thank Sault College for helping us to interview, hire and train so many of their great international students,” said Mike Butler, owner McDonald’s. “They have been a terrific group. They are focused on training, have a great work ethic, and really want to work. Recently, we have said over and over how lucky we are to have them. In fact I would go a step further and say we would be lost without them,” he added.

Sault College is extremely grateful for the relationship formed with McDonald’s and looks forward to building on this and helping our students find valuable work experience.

If you are a local business with hiring needs and would like more information on hiring students, both domestic and international, please contact Ray Corcoran at 705.759.2554 extension 2466.

Interested employers can also participate in a part-time job fair happening at the College on October 17 from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. If you are interested in joining or would like more information, please contact Ray.
