Local Air Cadet recognized with bursary (8 photos)

155 BORDEN GRAY AIR CADET SQUADRON

"I am very grateful in receiving this bursary and the $1,000 will help with my Architectural Technician course at Sheridan College," WO2 Harmony Buzwa stated after receiving the Friends of the 155 Borden Gray GC Squadron Bursary. "Without these funds I would have had a financial challenge in attending this course." 

Mr. Paul Dalseg was a World War II, Royal Canadian Air Force Veteran, past owner of the local Canadian Tire and is the founding member of this bursary awarded annual to a deserving air cadet of the 155 Squadron. 

Brigadier General Retired Martin Galvin, Dean of Aviation, Technologies and Trades at Canadore College in North Bay was the Reviewing Officer at the 77th Annual Review of the 155 Squadron.

Many other deserving air cadets were recognized with awards and medals which was held recently at the Sault Ste Armoury. During his remarks, he commended the cadets on their hard work and the displays that they presenting highlighting their training. 

Also performing was combined 155 Squadron and 2310 Army Cadet Pipe and Drum Band accompanied by Highland Dancers which recently placed first in Northern Ontario for the thirteen time. They will be competing at the Regional Band and Drill Competition at CFB Borden for the Top Band in Ontario.

Flight Sergeant Zack Nott was presented the Lord Strathcona Medal, which is the highest Award that can be bestowed upon a Cadet. The awarding is in recognition of exemplary performance in physical and military training while in a leadership role in 155 Squadron and the many hours of volunteer work in the community mentoring students to prepare for robotic competitions. This while attending high school and having a part time job.

MP Terry Sheehan presented a Parliamentary Recognition to the Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre for their support of the 155 Squadron and the partnership in the Dr. Roberta Bondar Air Cadet Training Program, which Dan Ingram, Executive Director of the Bushplane accepted. MP Sheehan also recognized several other individuals who have supported the 155 Squadron over the years. He addressed the air cadets and the staff for their commitment. He also recognized two 155 Squadron Alumni who paid the ultimate sacrifice, Major Bruce Arnott and Captain Cliff Healey while in the service of Canada. He directed these comments to the families of the two who where attending and had just received In Memory of Flags from the 155 Squadron.

Martin Galvin made a presentation on Friday at Korah Colligate and Vocational School to students in the various trades. He highlighted the Aviation Trades that the qualified students are in high demand from employers as well as other trades that are available at Canadore College. Mr. Galvin also described the National Air Cadet Aircraft and Airport Operations Summer Training that is conducted annually at Canadore. 

Mr. Galvin also had a tour of the Bushplane Museum and Maker North to see where the 155 Sqn. Air Cadets conduct some of their hands on training in aviation related skills and knowledge which the cadets experience outside of a class room setting. He also toured Algoma District School Boards, Aerospace Specialist High Skills Majors Program workshop. He heard a description of what the high school students learn from Joe Luxton, instructor of the program.
