WATCH: Province halts indoor dining, fitness activities in Toronto, Ottawa and Peel Region

Retail outlets, schools, and places of worship will remain open, the Premier said

Update:
Today, Premier Doug Ford announced that, based on public health expert recommendations, starting Saturday at 12:01 a.m. new public health measures will be in place for Toronto, Ottawa and Peel Region for at least 28 days.

"As we post record testing numbers, the percentage of people testing positive is rising too quickly, with some communities showing as high as 10 per cent positivity," the Premier said.

"If left unchecked, we face worst-case scenarios."

He announced that in the aforementioned regions restaurants and bars will be closed for indoor dining; indoor fitness centre will be closed; and cinemas, theatres, gaming establishments, museums, galleries, and attractions will all be closed.

Other measures include no personal care services will be permitted where face coverings must be removed, and mall food courts will be closed (take-out service is permitted).

However, retail outlets, schools, and places of worship will remain open.

Original information:
Premier Doug Ford will be joined by Christine Elliott, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health; Rod Phillips, Minister of Finance; Dr. David Williams, Chief Medical Officer of Health; and Adalsteinn (Steini) Brown, Dean of the Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto for today's announcement.

The announcement comes just hours after Ontario confirmed 939 COVID-19 cases, a single-day record for the province.

The media event is expected to begin at 2:30 p.m. from Queen's Park.

Village Media will carry the livestream once it begins, so please stay tuned.
