************************* Lieutenant Governor offers condolences on death of Ken Danby

TORONTO, September 26 - It was with great sadness that I learned of the sudden death of Ken Danby.

I never met Mr. Danby, but, like most Canadians, I felt a personal connection through his iconic paintings, 'At the Crease' and 'Lacing Up.'

Through these, and other paintings - most notably his 1980s watercolour series on the Americas Cup and the Winter Olympics in Sarajevo - Mr. Danby introduced art to a segment of the population that might not otherwise have been exposed to the deeply personal pleasures of art appreciation.

But there was so much more to him than the sports paintings for which Mr. Danby gained such wide celebrity.

From the mundane - work boots abandoned by a mud scraper, the youthful exuberance of a lad balancing on a backyard fence - to the magnificent - the still, glacial depths of Lake Louise, storm clouds gathering at sunset on Lake Superior - his prodigious talent captured them all in a splendid body of work that will bring pleasure to Canadians for generations to come.

I join all Ontarians in extending my deepest sympathy to Ken Danby's widow, Gillian, and to his children and step-children.
