The Sault Ste. Marie Public Library’s Centennial Branch at 50 East St. is looking for donations of Halloween costumes (clean and in good condition) for its first ever costume swap, to be held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 21.

The swap is for both children and adult-sized costumes.

“We’re trying to help out people who are trying to find costumes on a budget,” said Matthew MacDonald, SSMPL manager of public services.

The program is free.

“It’s for families that can’t afford a costume or they need to spend their money on something else, so we’re trying to give the community an opportunity to swap if they have a costume they don’t need anymore, or if they need a costume to come pick one up.”

“Kids grow out of costumes so quickly. You buy a Halloween costume one year and you might not be able to use it the next, and to give another child an opportunity to have and wear that costume would be great.”

“We’re not asking people to necessarily bring costumes in order to take one, so that’s why we’re asking for donations ahead of time. We’re really pushing right now to get more costume donations from the community.”

Costume donations are being accepted at the children’s desk on the library’s main floor.

This is the first year for a library Halloween costume swap, MacDonald said, though clothing swaps for teens have previously been held at the library’s Korah branch.
