Keynote speakers, Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish and Robert J. Deluce highlight event

Friends and family of Sault College’s newest graduates will come together to celebrate and recognize academic achievements at three spring convocation ceremonies.

The first ceremony begins at 2 p.m. on Thursday, May 22 and confers students in the School of Health, Wellness and Continuing Education.

The remaining two ceremonies will take place on Friday, May 23 with a ceremony for graduates from the School of Community Services and Interdisciplinary Studies taking place at 10 a.m., while the graduation ceremony for students from the School of Environment, Technology and Business will take place at 2 p.m.

All of the convocation events will take place at the new Student Health and Wellness Centre with a total of 1,019 students eligible to graduate from Sault College this year.

Thursday afternoon and Friday morning’s ceremony will feature a keynote address by Nobel Peace Prize nominated Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish.

Dr. Abuelaish will be receiving an honourary diploma in Peace and Conflict Studies at Friday morning’s convocation ceremony.

Friday afternoon’s ceremony will feature Robert J. Deluce, President and Chief Executive Officer of Porter Airlines.

As per tradition, platform party guests, faculty and students will be piped in by the 49th Field Artillery Pipe Band, followed by a welcome from President Dr. Ron Common and Board of Governors Chair, Carla Fabbro.

As in previous years, the College welcomes the “Korahsters” from Korah Collegiate, under the direction of Denine Williams, who will be singing the national anthem and a dedication song before each ceremony on Friday.

Following the presentation of liripipes and diplomas, there will be an honour drum song performed by the White Thunder Women from the local Ojibwe community.

Smudging will be available before the events at the Health and Wellness Centre.

A reception with refreshments will take place at Odeno after each ceremony where faculty and staff can celebrate with students, their families and friends.
