Algoma U and 49th Regiment launch new collection

'Lest We Forget' Remembrance and Military Library launched on May 25

SAULT STE. MARIE, ON (May 27, 2013) - This past Saturday, Algoma University and the 49th Field Artillery Regiment, Royal Canada Artillery (RCA), launched its new collection, the "Lest We Forget" Remembrance and Military Library (LWFRML), which houses a special collection of books focusing on Canada's vast military history and peacekeeping activities.

In 2011, after signing a Memorandum of Understanding for Research and Education with university president Dr. Richard Myers, and Honorary Lieutenant Colonel Clyde Healey of the 49th Field Artillery Regiment, RCA, both endeavoured to create and maintain a centre of excellence for the study and promotion of remembrance and military history, in Sault Ste. Marie and the surrounding area.

"The 49th Field Artillery Regiment, Royal Canada Artillery, is pleased with the contributions Algoma University and the Wishart Library have made to ensure the successful and timely launch of the 'Lest We Forget' Remembrance and Military Library," said Honorary Lieutenant Colonel Clyde Healey of the 49th Field Artillery Regiment, RCA. "This collection will help maintain the legacy of the Canadian military in Northern Ontario, and will help the public understand the efforts of our veterans. We are looking forward to sharing our history with the public, and continuously expanding the collection as more materials become available."

With the help of Ken Hernden, the university librarian, Robin Isard, the e-services librarian, Janice Perry, the resource acquisitions and metadata technician, and Tracy Spurway, the public services and collections technician, the collection launched at the Sault Armoury at a mess dinner for members of the military community. 

"This collaboration illustrates the support and expertise a university library can bring to hidden but valuable resources and history," said Hernden. "It also exemplifies Algoma University's commitment to giving back our community."

Currently, the collection includes approximately 1,000 books which are related to Canada's military history. 

In time, the Wishart Library wishes to add specialized and archival research material, including oral histories and manuscripts that support the regimental history being written and researched by the university's faculty and students.

The LWFRML collection is available for faculty, students, staff, and registered readers from the community through the Wishart Library. 

Those interested in accessing or requesting materials can do so through the LWFRML portal.

Materials may be regulated through check-out or in-library use depending upon the nature of each item.
