The following announcement was released today by the Ontario Ministry of Transportation:

**************************************************************** Detours to be constructed on Highway 11 at Latchford

LATCHFORD, ON, Jan. 16 - The Ministry of Transportation advises motorists that it will immediately begin the construction of a single-lane detour beside the Sergeant Aubrey Cosens Memorial Bridge on Highway 11 in Latchford. Part of the bridge deck experienced structural damage on January 14, and Highway 11 is currently closed to northbound and southbound traffic at that location.

The single-lane temporary detour will comprise a 50-metre modular bridge and a 60-metre causeway.

The temporary bridge will be constructed east of the existing bridge on the Montreal River, and is expected to open within two weeks.

Traffic on this bridge will be controlled by traffic signals on both sides.

With the spring thaw, there will be a need to remove the temporary bridge and causeway to accommodate increased waterflow.

Therefore, the ministry is also making plans to construct a two-lane temporary, longer modular bridge over the Montreal River. To minimize impacts on travellers, detours have been established as follows:

From Ottawa - Hwy 533 or 63 to Quebec Hwy 101, then Hwy 65 to New Liskeard

From Toronto - Hwy 400 to Hwy 69 to Hwy 144 From North Bay - Hwy 63 to Quebec Hwy 101 to Hwy 65

From Thunder Bay, Kapuskasing, Hearst, etc. - Hwy 655 south, then Hwy 144 to Hwy 69 to Hwy 400 south

Carrier traffic (truck and bus operators) using the Quebec detour are asked to call (819) 763-3107 xt. 222, before traveling the route for permit and safety compliance information.

Carriers are reminded that the Province of Quebec will be monitoring for compliance with all safety items, such as load security, vehicle inspections and hours of work.

Carriers requiring Quebec O/O are asked to contact (514) 873-6400 (bilingual service) or (418) 643-5586 (French service only).

The Highway 11 closures will remain in effect until the temporary single-lane bridge is opened.

The Ministry of Transportation will provide updates on the status of the reopening.
