That's Ken Newell.

He carries a video camera.

And for that, the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service is extremely grateful.

Newell has somehow managed to catch three serious crimes live on his camera: a break-in, a theft and a group of young people shooting a rifle at passing cars from a Korah Road rooftop.

Newell received one of eight Police Service Board Commendations presented at the 18th Annual Police Community Programs Night, jointly sponsored by the Holiday Inn and the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service.

The following is Newell's commendation, as prepared by the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service:

Ken Newell

On three separate occasions, our next recipient not only witnessed crimes in progress but also was able to videotape these incidents with a significant amount of detail.

The first incident that Mr. Newell caught on tape was that of several young offenders on the rooftop of a Korah Road residence.

This video clearly showed the shots being fired at passing cars and what each person’s role was in this potentially dangerous act.

Secondly, in September of 2003 he videotaped two people breaking in to the Beaver Gas Bar at Korah Road and Wallace Terrace.

From the videotape our officers were able to identify the 2 culprits, recover a large quantity of stolen cigarettes and a stolen car.

And thirdly, in November of last year Mr. Newell and his camera went back into action after he observed several people hanging around the Korah Road Beaver Gas Bar at 2 in the morning.

While alerting police to the crime in progress his camera was rolling and once again supplied the police with a significant piece of evidence.

With the assistance of Mr. Newell, three serious crimes came to a swift conclusion and resulted in convictions against those who committed the crimes.
