He filed his nomination papers today. "There are many great projects started which are moving the Sault forward and I want to see those jobs completed," said the councillor, referring to the sports and entertainment centre, truck route and sewage treatment plant projects, as well as the many large construction projects already underway. Councillor Curran has represented Ward 2 for most of the last nine years, having been elected in 1997 and 2003 and appointed to fill a council vacancy in 2002.

He has lived in Ward 2 for most of his life. During that time he has worked with community leaders and council members to add jobs, expand the tax base, provide responsible leadership and market the area's potential. Projects in the planning and implementation stage are the new hospital, waterfront walkway addition, hub trail system, highway bypass route, new landfill site, invasive species centre and animation facility, among others, he said. Councillor Curran said he would work on these projects while keeping an eye on the tax load.

"The key is to expand the tax base by attracting more retail and industry here, and build our population base," he said. He prides himself on his community work, citing over 30 years of working on behalf of health, sports, service and community organizations.

He has been involved in such varied activities as fund-raising for United Way, coaching minor hockey and helping the disadvantaged. He was the driving force behind getting the Millennium Water Fountain in the river by Clergue Park.

He was a founding board member of PUC Inc. when it was reorganized in 2000.

As president of the local Association for the Mentally Retarded, he oversaw the establishment of the Soogoma Industries building on White Oak Drive. He has established himself as a hard-working and approachable councillor, handling over 1,000 contacts with residents each year. Councillor Curran is married to Joan, a high school teacher, and they have three children: Bruce, a lawyer in Toronto; Andrea, an elementary teacher in York Region; and Jamie, a doctor who is returning to the Sault later this year to practise medicine.
