Jennifer and Sheryl are staying put

Algoma District School Board held their inaugural meeting on Dec. 5. Jennifer Sarlo was acclaimed and will continue in her role as chair of the board. Sheryl Evans-Price was also acclaimed as vice chair for her second year.

Jennifer Sarlo was first elected as a trustee for the Algoma District School Board in 2006 serving Ward One, Sault Ste. Marie. In 2009, Jennifer became vice chair of the board and in December 2011, she was elected as chair.

She has served as an alternate member of the Ontario Public School Board Association’s (OPSBA’s) Policy Committee. In her years with the board, Jennifer has also taken an active role in the School Effectiveness Visits and has been on the New Schools Steering Committee.

She has been a member of the Finance and Operations Committee, the Discipline Committee and the External Audit Committee.

Prior to being elected to the Algoma District School Board, Jennifer was the chair of ADSB’s School Council Coordinating Committee (SCCC) now known as the Parent Involvement Committee (PIC). She was also the chair of Grand View Public School’s School Council.

She has always been very supportive and involved in the elementary and high schools her children attended (Grand View, Korah and White Pines). Jennifer is also an involved and respected member of her community and her church.

“I am honored to continue to serve the Algoma District School Board as its chair for my sixth year. Thank you fellow trustees for your confidence and continued support. I am proud of our team of trustees who serve the needs of our board and students with dedication and passion. I look forward to continuing to work with vice chair Sheryl Evans-Price.

"The new year will include a review of our strategic plan and a review of our priorities. I believe we are well poised as a board to continue to build confident learners and caring citizens that will positively impact our schools, our community and our world. I look forward to continuing to work with our Director Lucia Reece and our Senior Administration team as we further drill into our strategic priorities around achievement, well-being and engagement.

"I would also like to embark on setting up a policy and procedure around a board self-assessment, which would give us an opportunity to look within our board for areas of strength and opportunities for improvement, which would be a timely exercise before we enter into an election in the fall of 2018.”

Vice Chair Sheryl Evans-Price

Sheryl Evans-Price was elected to represent Prince Township and Unorganized Townships for the Dec. 1, 2014 to Nov. 30, 2018 term. She is an active volunteer within her school communities where she has resided, previously in Aweres Public School and now in Mountain View Public School. Sheryl has sat on school councils for many years, volunteered

in breakfast programs, and was the chair of the Accommodation Review Committee (ARC) for Aweres Public School in 2013/2014.

Sheryl has been working in healthcare for 16 years, and currently is working at Extendicare Vandaele. She has a passion for palliative care, resident rights, and for providing excellence in geriatric care. She served two years on the Board of Directors at the Sault YMCA, one year as vice chair of the YMCA Board, where she had opportunity to lead in governance, participate in strategic planning, and represent the YMCA at the City of Sault Ste Marie’s Local Immigration Partnership.

As an ADSB trustee, Sheryl has participated fully sitting on the Parent Involvement Committee, Budget and Opertaions Committee, and Audit Committee, and previously as an alternate on the Special Education Advisory Committee. She spent one year serving as the northeastern representative on the Policy Development Work Team at the Ontario Public School Board Association (OPSBA).

Sheryl thanked her colleagues around the board table as she is honoured to have their support moving into her second year as vice chair.

“It is because of all of you, with your experience, your knowledge, your own drive to be lead learners and excellent mentors that I am so inspired to lead here in this role at our board.” She is “grateful to be a part of a board that holds so much value in growing their leaders, and always lifting people up; from our students, to our teachers and support staff, within our administration, and right here around the board table.”

Sheryl looks forward to the years ahead built with a strong foundation around our “character education, equity and inclusiveness, support for our FNMI students and communities, our ever-growing diverse and forward thinking programming that supports passion in all of our students, and in our many partnerships within the Algoma Model and throughout Algoma District.”

OPSBA Committee appointments

The Ontario Public School Boards’ Association (OPSBA) requests that each board appoint a director to OPSBA Board of Directors and a voting delegate to the Annual General Meeting of OPSBA. Boards are also requested to appoint alternates for these positions. These appointments are for one year terms.

At the inaugural meeting the board confirmed the appointment of Trustee Graham Lidstone as director to OPSBA Board of Directors and voting delegate for the Annual General Meeting of Ontario Public School Boards’ Association for 2018.

The Board confirmed the appointment of Trustee Susan Thayer as the alternate for the director to OPSBA Board of Directors and voting delegate to Ontario Public School Boards’ Annual General Meeting for 2018.
