Jason Gauthier has been re-elected as chief of Missanabie Cree First Nation following elections for chief and council held Aug. 15.

Gauthier garnered 177 votes, defeating both Kim Rainville (54 votes) and Cheryl Macumber (18 votes) in their run for chief by a wide margin.

Of the 254 votes cast for chief, five ballots were rejected.

Meanwhile, Les Nolan, Cory McLeod, Jo Ann Pezzo, Shawn Pine and Bobbi Fletcher-Decorte were all elected to council.

254 votes were cast in order to elect council, with two of those ballots being rejected.

Missanabie Cree First Nation was granted reserve status in 2018 after a lengthy claims process, one which first saw the First Nation file a claim under the Government of Canada’s specific claims process for Treaty land entitlement in 1993.

A total of 3,892.282 hectares (9,618.038 acres) of land has been since set aside for the First Nation.
