NEWS RELEASE

CITY OF SAULT STE. MARIE

*************************
SAULT STE.  MARIE, ONT. – The City of Sault Ste. Marie is seeking input regarding the Vacant Unit Rebate Program.

The public can provide feedback by attending an open house and/or completing a short survey.

Open House Date: Tuesday, April 11, 2017 – 4 to 7 p.m.
Location: Russ Ramsay Room, Level 3, Civic Centre
Survey: www.surveymonkey.com/r/8TLMPV6 (survey closes April 10)

The City currently provides tax relief to property owners with vacancies in commercial and industrial buildings only. A rebate of 30% (commercial properties) and 35 per cent (industrial properties) of total property taxes is funded through the overall tax levy.

Residential property taxes fund approximately 70 per cent of this subsidy. Beginning in 2017, the Province of Ontario is allowing municipalities to amend the vacant unit program to best respond to local needs and priorities.

Feedback from property owners, business owners, and the public on how the City’s tax levy is allocated is critical to achieving community objectives.
