International bridge sees more crossings in April 2021 than 2020

Travel still restricted to essential only

More vehicles have crossed the international bridge between Sault, Ont. and Sault, Mich. this April than in 2020.

According to a report issued by the International Bridge Administration, a total of 50,265 vehicles have crossed the bridge to date this year.

In April 2021, 13,079 vehicles crossed one-way, an increase of 40.7 per cent from April 2020, which saw 9,299 crossings. Comparatively, pre-COVID-19, 102,102 vehicles crossed in the month of April 2019 alone.

Majority of travellers in April 2021 were commercial trucks, making up 7,308 crossings, and regular commuters, making up 4,714 crossings. The remaining crossings were 906 full-fare travellers and 151 car-pulling trailers.

The Canada-U.S. border closure has been extended until at least May 21, 2021. The border has been closed to non-essential travel since March 2020.
