International Development Week Activities

Hosted by Sault College Local WUSC Committee International development week promotes volunteering abroad and informs of safety measures recommended for such work

SAULT STE. MARIE, ON (February 4, 2013) - Whether you are interested in volunteering or would like to hear from others who have volunteered abroad, Sault College is offering workshops on the importance of international missions along with some safety measures associated with this type of service.
 
February 3 to 9 marks International Development Week, an opportunity to explore how Canada and Canadians are making a difference around the world. 

During this week, Sault College’s local WUSC committee will be hosting a Uniterra Symposia, focusing on the topic of “The Impacts of International Volunteering: Opportunities and Challenges.”
 
Three events are scheduled to explore the topic from many different viewpoints.

The first is an international film screening of “Half the Sky,” a moving documentary focused on gender based inequality in the developing world.

The event will be on Tuesday, February 5 in room M1030 beginning at 6 p.m.

There will also be a collection of art pieces on display from artist Alicia Hunt, who’s beautiful and powerful artworks are rooted in contemplation about refugee life. Free popcorn and pop will be served for the movie.

On Wednesday, February 6 at 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. in room B1170, a feature lecture will be given by Sault College President Dr. Ron Common who will speak about his experiences abroad.

Dr. Common has worked on international development projects in Malawi, Cameroon, Kenya, China and Jordan for the past decade.

He was inducted into the Nipissing Human Rights Hall of Fame for his work with First Nations and disadvantaged people around the world.

His discussion focuses not only on the opportunities available to volunteer abroad but also some of the challenges international aides face.

Yves Kalala, a former refugee student will speak about his experiences and the World University Service of Canada and Uniterra.
 
International Development Week at Sault College concludes on Thursday, February 7 at 6:30 p.m. in M1030.

Members of the community, Sault College, and local organizations will conduct a multi-person panel discussion.

After a short introduction of each organization, the group will field questions from the audience and provide insights on the many factors to consider when volunteering abroad.

There will also be booths set up for local organizations, where participants can learn more about the different opportunities abroad.
 
“The goal of International Development Week is to see all sides of international volunteering – from the organization, to the volunteer, to the person in need,” notes Graham Barber, cultural activities coordinator at Sault College. “We want to encourage others to learn more about international development and share their experiences. Promoting public engagement through the activities planned will help our local community develop a global perspective and take action for social justice worldwide.”
 
These events are open to the public and are offered free-of-charge with parking available in front of Essar hall or in the A-Lot located across the street from the College.
