A Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care order to Extendicare Maple View to stop admitting new residents stems from an inspection of the long-term care facility Oct. 3.

“A ministry inspector identified multiple concerns related to resident care,” stated David Jensen, Ministry spokesperson, in an email to SooToday.

“As a result, the ministry has issued a Cease of Admissions order for the home, effective October 30, 2018. A Cease of Admissions ensures the licensee and staff in the home direct all resources to the current residents and focus all efforts on correcting issues of concern quickly,” Jensen wrote.

“A direction to cease admissions can only be given when the Director has cause to believe there is risk of harm to the health or well-being of residents. The Cease of Admissions will remain in place until steps have been taken by the licensee to achieve compliance and address the issues outlined in the Compliance Orders issued by ministry inspectors,” Jensen stated.

As reported earlier by SooToday, Marva Griffiths, Extendicare Maple View administrator, issued a statement in which she wrote “over the past year, Extendicare Maple View has been working on enhancements in their quality improvement process to ensure that all our residents receive the highest quality care based on their individual needs.”

Those enhancements, Griffiths wrote, include hiring of an experienced administrator, recruitment of new staff members to address the needs of residents and ensuring staff receives regular education and training in resident care.

“Our team will continue to proactively work with the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, the North East LHIN and our residents and families to provide the highest quality of care, dignity and safety to our residents. We understand that we have long waiting lists in the community for people who need our services and we are working hard to ensure we are compliant as soon as possible in order to meet this need."

"We will keep everyone updated as this situation develops,” Griffiths wrote.

The 256-bed Extendicare Maple View facility, located at 650 Northern Ave. E., officially opened June 8, 2013.

248 residents were transferred from Extendicare Great Northern, Extendicare Tendercare and Extendicare Van Daele over a four-day period in early April of that year.

Costing $46 million to build, Maple View is arranged in ‘neighbourhoods’ of 32 residents each, to create a more homelike atmosphere within the larger building.

Each neighbourhood has private rooms for residents, a fireplace lounge with TV and an outdoor patio for comfort and social interaction, the facility also including a hair salon, café, exercise facility and a chapel.
