Police stop car east of Blind River, discover open liquor

BLIND RIVER - On Nov. 22, 2016 shortly before 9 p.m., the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a complaint regarding a male that was driving a motor vehicle and was possibly under the influence of alcohol. 

The motor vehicle was observed driving erratically and was subsequently stopped on Highway 17 east of Blind River. 

While the officer was speaking to the male driver, a female passenger exited the motor vehicle and was asked to return to the vehicle for her safety due to traffic. A subsequent search of the motor vehicle revealed open liquor.     

As a result of the investigation, Ted Joseph Bergeron, 55 years of age, from Spanish, Ontario, was arrested and charged with:

  • Driving While Ability Impaired – Motor Vehicle (Alcohol), contrary to section 253(1)(a) of the Criminal Code;
  • Driving with more than 80 mgs of Alcohol in Blood, contrary to section 253(1)(b) of the Criminal Code; and
  • Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle, contrary to section 249(1)(a) of the Criminal Code and,

Denise Laforge, 43 years of age, from Spanish, Ontario was arrested and charged with:

  • Consuming liquor in other than licenced premises, residence or private place, contrary to section 31(2) of the Liquor Licence Act.

The Festive RIDE season is a proactive initiative to target impaired drivers during the holidays and make East Algoma a safer place.” - Staff Sergeant Tyler Sturgeon.

The Ontario Provincial Police want to remind drivers that someone is always watching. We can’t be everywhere, so we rely on our citizens to help us in keeping our roads safe.
