The intensive care unit (ICU) at Sault Area Hospital has nearly all of its permanent beds in use.

In an email to SooToday Sunday, hospital spokesperson Brandy Sharp Young said that 14 of 17 permanent ICU beds are being used, but noted that the hospital has the capacity to surge to 22 beds if required.

Seven individuals in the intensive care unit are on ventilators.

Right now, there is one confirmed COVID-19 patient in the ICU.

There are currently nine patients admitted to Sault Area Hospital with COVID-19, including the one ICU patient. Algoma Public Health, meanwhile, reported 11 patients with COVID-19 in hospital throughout the public health region Sunday.

On Sunday, Public Health Ontario reported 412 people in ICU with COVID-19, and 226 patients in ICU with COVID-19 currently on ventilators (8 of those patients no longer test positive for COVID-19).
