8 a.m. update

ESPANOLA – On Dec. 6, 2016 at 11:37 p.m., members from the Espanola Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a two-vehicle fatal motor vehicle collision on Highway 17, west of the Town of Massey.

Preliminary investigation indicates than an eastbound moving van crossed the roadway and collided with an oncoming westbound passenger car.

Investigation has revealed that two persons from the passenger car were killed with two passengers from the same vehicle transported to hospital by Emergency Medical Services (EMS) with serious injuries. The driver of the moving van was also transported to hospital by EMS with serious injuries.

Officers remain on scene while the investigation is ongoing with the assistance of the OPP Technical Traffic Collision Investigators (TTCI).

Identity of the deceased persons is pending due to notification of next of kin.

Highway 17 has re-opened and was closed for approximately seven hours. Updates will be provided as the investigation continues.

SUDBURY — Highway 17 west of Massey has reopened to one lane this morning after a fatal two-vehicle collision in the early morning hours.

The Espanola OPP sent out a press release at 12:41 a.m. Dec. 7, saying the highway was closed between Victoria Salter Road and Seldom Seen Road.

But the OPP North East Region says on its Twitter page that the highway reopened to one lane at 5:40 a.m.

The OPP is investigating the collision.
