SooToday.com has confirmed that a Huron Central train has derailed tonight at Mile 143 in Bruce Station.

That's about 40 kilometres east of Sault Ste. Marie in the Township of Plummer Additional.

Residents there advise us that the accident happened around 4:55 p.m. today.

The six derailed cars were carrying steel coils.

Markings on the rail cars indicate that each car was around 115 tons.

About 500 feet of track is torn up, we're advised.

Ontario Provincial Police tell us there were no injuries.

They believe no hazardous materials were involved.

One resident tells us that the derailment happened at a private crossing not far from the Bruce Station Community Hall.

"The cars fortunately landed on soft ground," he said. "They didn't go anywhere, just got buried."

There's an old siding alongside the affected track that should assist rail crews in restoring service.

The derailment is less than 400 metres from a house.

SooToday.com will post further information as it becomes available.
