Police officers pulled what appeared to be a human hand out of the water this afternoon, only to determine the hand was actually a fake, says Const. Sonny Spina with the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service.

A call for service came in about 12:30 p.m. reporting a human hand in the water on the south end of Whitefish Island.

Officers with the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service, Batchewana First Nation Police and OPP arrived on scene to find what Spina described as ‘an incredibly lifelike human hand with blood on it’ in the water.

“Officers weren’t able to initially get down to the scene, however when our officers arrived with their equipment, they were able to actually get down to it,” said Spina.

He added, “when the item was actually taken out of the water, they found it was actually a prosthetic or fake hand with blood on it.”

The members of the public who called in to police did the right thing, said Spina.

“We like to allow people to leave these things to the professionals and allow officers to get down there safely in order to do that,” said Spina.

Now that it has been removed from the water, the fate of the fake hand is unclear, said Spina, and police declined an opportunity to allow media to photograph it.
