HSCDSB recognizes Holocaust Awareness Day

Members of the Board of Trustees of the Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board (HSCDSB) have unanimously passed a resolution at their monthly meeting recognizing Jan. 27 as International Holocaust Awareness Day.

The United Nations proclaimed Jan. 27 as the International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust, as on that day in 1945, the Nazi German concentration and extermination camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau was liberated.

“The Holocaust is one of the darkest hours of humanity. To ensure that such a travesty never happens again, it is paramount that our students know what happened and how they can act in the future to ensure we never see it repeated,” said HSCDSB Chair, John Caputo.    

In HSCDSB schools, teaching of the atrocities of the Holocaust is age appropriate. The day also allows educators to speak with students about incidents of antisemitism, racism and xenophobia.  

“This day allows our educators to continue to incorporate various components of our Multi-Year Strategic Plan, including Catholicity, Relationships and Supportive Environments and Well-Being. Every day we focus on integrating an attitude of inclusiveness in our school communities and International Holocaust Remembrance Day is another opportunity to reinforce our dedication to that goal,” said HSCDSB Director of Education, John Stadnyk.
