The Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board is calling its enrichment program, which wrapped on May 19, a “real success” after providing it in a solely virtual format this year.

The after-school enrichment program was expanded this year to include students in Grade 4 and 5.

It said this allowed students who participated last year to extend their learning and leadership.

Both programs, which ran for 10 sessions beginning in April, included students extending from Hornepayne to Espanola.

The school board said participants were fully engaged in lessons that incorporated coding, numeracy, literacy, Catholic teachings and Indigenous perspectives.

Teacher Anita Turcotte said the results of the Canadian Cognitive Abilities Test, the standardized group test administered to all Grade 4 students, assisted in determining eligibility into the enrichment program.

“The program provides an opportunity for students to work with peers to engage in activities that promote creative and complex ways of thinking,” Turcotte said in a press release.

Grade 4 teacher Angela Somme said the program has also been a “wonderful experience” for teachers.

“My favourite lesson was the Pringles STEM ring challenge. We had lots of laughs and worked together sharing our strategies,” said Somme.

The Catholic school board said a survey was sent to families to allow feedback for next year.
